Life at Pacifico

Student-Run, Student-Managed

Since there's no University or landlord in charge, Pacifico co-op relies on its members to do the work needed to run the houses.  This participation by the members of the coop helps keep control of the coop in your hands, and keeps the cost of your rent as low as possible.

Chores

Like any living situation, it takes a lot of time and money to keep clean, well-stocked, and prepare meals. By sharing household chores, a co-op can get more done - for less cost - than many students can living alone.  Each member is required to do 1 hour per week of labor, although the membership can discuss doing more labor (to provide more services) or doing less labor. The labor requirements are fulfilled in a variety of ways. Labor at Pacifico deals with issues like bill paying, dish washing, gardening, mopping, and other tasks that need to be done.

Leadership

Many tasks the labor system gives credit for involve playing a leadership role, which could mean financial planning, maintenance work, serving on the governing council or board of directors, or any other tasks that the members decide to create.  The goal of these positions is to keep the control of the coop in the hands of the members, and to work on projects of lasting value and building our community.  These positions offer co-opers practical experience, which may be useful later when applying for jobs or graduate school. The co-op sometimes offers discounts for leadership positions. If you are interested inquire with your house members.

Eating Together

Houses with meal plans require each member to participate in some additional labor in order to provide good meals to members: from menu planning and shopping to cooking and cleaning.
